Thanksgiving Food Drive
Thanksgiving is right around the corner and Covid-19 has created financial hardship for many right in our area. Our goal is to help local Veterans and Families in need enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving meal. We want our Thanksgiving Dinner Baskets to contain everything needed to prepare a wonderful holiday meal. Covid-19 may change the way families celebrate Thanksgiving this year. In the past families may have been invited to a large Thanksgiving celebration but now due to Covid-19 many families will celebrate at home. We want families to chance to enjoy a meal together and create memories.
Please read below and learn the different ways you can help.
I love this time of year, air is brisk and the trees look like a tapestry of colors. I have shared this before but I think it is important to share it again.
It feels like it wasn’t too long ago when I received a Thanksgiving Food Basket. I never thought of myself as “needy”. Within a year and a half time span I lost my mother, survived domestic violence, divorced, and became a single mom. I am thankful for others that reached out to me when I did not have the courage to ask for help.
Days before Thanksgiving, when I was scrambling around trying to figure out how to host a “normal” Thanksgiving dinner for my young children, the doorbell rang. I opened the door and in front of me were a group of familiar faces; several of my children’s teachers and the guidance counselor. They were standing there with bags and boxes of traditional Thanksgiving food and the perfect turkey.
I have to say I felt embarrassed…. Why couldn’t I provide this for my children? I wanted them to hurry up because I did not want the neighbors to see anyone dropping off food to me…. I did not want anyone to see me as weak or needy. They greeted me with huge smiles. I was at a loss for words. I stood there in astonishment that our “School Family” would go out of their way to make sure my children and I were taken care of.
Even though this was such a tough time in my life, this touch of kindness gave my girls and I a sense of normalcy. That Thanksgiving we had all the traditional trimmings and more! It is a Thanksgiving I will not forget. Smiles and squeals I still remember. Never underestimate the difference YOU can make! Will you be an “Angel” and help me provide a traditional Thanksgiving meal to a family in need?
Angels Community Outreach wants to create memories for local families in need. While many of us have plans to have a hearty Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings, many local families are struggling financially and will not have the luxury. We want to provide overflowing Thanksgiving Baskets of joy this holiday so families in need can celebrate Thanksgiving with a traditional meal. –Elissa
